About Jolanda
My name is Jolanda Kales. In my small studio in Katwijk aan Zee I make unique, handmade ceramics with a great deal of love and pleasure. What once began as a hobby has slowly grown into a real passion.
My story
I started making ceramics because I loved working with my hands and creating something beautiful. Before long I was making more than I could keep myself or give away to family and friends.
I am always curious about new techniques and enjoy challenging myself to keep getting better. New shapes, colours and ideas kept emerging. After a while I decided to offer my work online as well, so that others could enjoy it too.
Making ceramics is also a way for me to deliberately slow down. Clay cannot be rushed. From shaping to drying, glazing and firing: every piece asks for time, patience and attention.
My inspiration
My love for the mountains, their beauty and their strength, inspires me when I make colourful art vases. For my bowls I like to use vintage lace, whose fine patterns are pressed into the wet clay and stay behind as a distinctive imprint.
Mission & values
I love the beauty of imperfection, inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. It is precisely the small differences and irregularities that give handmade ceramics their own character.
My greatest pleasure lies in making, discovering and continuing to learn. And how lovely it is when something I made with so much love finds a special place in someone else's home.
The studio
Every piece comes to life in my studio in Katwijk aan Zee. Surrounded by the light and sounds of the sea, I work with clay, glaze, and fire. Each work goes through a careful process of forming, drying, bisque firing, glazing, and the final high-temperature firing.

The studio
A small studio by the North Sea.
Jolanda makes every piece by hand in her studio in Katwijk aan Zee, close to the dunes and the sea. Her bowls take their pattern from vintage lace. Her colourful vases come from her love of the mountains.
Clay will not be rushed: hours of shaping, weeks of drying, days of firing and glazing. Small irregularities stay visible, because that is where the beauty lies. No two pieces are the same. Every work exists only once.
