Tall Ceramic Cylinder Vase, Handmade Powder Blue Speckled Stoneware, 21cm Textured Minimalist Flower Vase

A tall handmade ceramic cylinder vase in soft powder blue, with a crinkled, wind-worn surface and a speckled oatmeal base flecked with dark iron. One of a kind, hand-built in my home studio in Katwijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

About this piece

The walls are folded and pressed while the clay is still soft, so the surface reads like weathered fabric, dune sand or paper left out in the rain. Warm ochre and cream run through the ridges where the glaze thinned out, and the whole upper body has a faint frosted shimmer that only shows up in daylight.

The lower third is left in a speckled cream glaze, flecked with dark iron spots that come through the clay body during firing. That break between the soft blue and the raw speckle is the quietest thing about this piece and, to me, the best.

Where my other work shouts, this one is deliberately calm. It sits comfortably in a room that is already busy.

How to use it

A tall flower vase for a few long stems, dried grasses, pampas, bunny tails or a slim seasonal bunch — the narrow 10 cm body keeps an arrangement upright and elegant rather than sprawling. Also lovely empty, on a bedside table, a windowsill, a bathroom shelf, a hallway console or a mantelpiece.

For fresh flowers I recommend a glass or jar inside, to keep the glaze at its best.

Hand wash only. Not dishwasher or microwave safe.
